Burmese and Mandalays - the best family cat breed!
Burmese and Mandalay cats and kittens are a wonderful choice for families, especially those with young children. This breed is known for their affectionate and playful natures, these cats thrive on attention and are remarkably tolerant of the enthusiastic handling of small children. Burmese and Mandalay cats and kittens are short haired making them low maintenance. Burmese and Mandalays love to explore the outdoors but are just as happy soaking up the sun on a cosy windowsill. They remain playful and full of character well into adulthood, and their loyal, people-focused personalities mean they’ll happily snuggle up on or even in your bed every night. Confident travellers and lifelong companions, these cats truly become part of the family.
British Shorthair and British Longhair
British Shorthairs and British Longhairs are much-loved breeds in Europe and the USA, admired for their plush coats, round faces, expressive eyes and wonderfully gentle, easygoing personalities. Often described as teddy bears of the cat world, they are typically affectionate, calm and good-natured, making delightful companions for a wide range of homes. Here in Australasia, they are still less familiar to many people, who often picture only the classic blue (grey) British Shorthair. However, these beautiful breeds come in a wonderful variety of colours and patterns, including lilac, chocolate, cream, silver, golden, colourpoint and striking bicolours. And for those who love a little extra fluff, the British Longhair offers all the same charming characteristics with a luxurious, flowing coat. Whether short-coated or long-haired, these cats have a special combination of teddy-bear looks, solid substance and sweet, steady temperaments that makes them truly irresistible.
Burmese/Mandalay-British Crosses
Our experimental breeding programme brings together Burmese/Mandalay and British lines with the goal of developing a long-haired Burmese known as the Tiffany. These beautiful cats combine the affectionate, people-oriented personality of the Burmese with the soft, luxurious coat of a longhair — and what’s not to love about that! With very few breeders working with these cats in Australasia, none currently in New Zealand, and only a handful in Europe, we decided the best way forward was to develop our own programme. An exciting part of this journey is our British Longhair, Makdissy Prince Harry, a handsome bicolour cream boy who will help introduce some lovely bicolour patterns into the programme along the way. This is certainly going to be a fun and fascinating project! The Tiffany’s coat is also relatively low-maintenance for a long-haired cat, making it an appealing choice for those who love a fluffy feline without the demands of intensive grooming. An added benefit of this carefully planned programme is the opportunity to introduce greater genetic diversity into Burmese and Mandalay lines. Our first-generation crosses are available now, and while reaching our goal of the Tiffany will take at least three generations and several years of dedicated breeding, we’re excited to be taking the first steps towards developing this very special cat.
Do you have a cat allergy and are desperate to have a cat?
Are you looking for a hypoallergenic Cat?
Burmese and Mandalay cats as well as British shorthair and British Longhair are hypoallergenic, this means they have a low FelD1 secretion which is from the cat's saliva and present on their fur. Unfortunately the FelD1 isn't zero but if you're allergic to cats give them a go. Although they're sadly not completely allergen free they might be tolerable if you don't allow them in the bedroom -some people get used to them over a few weeks. You can buy hypoallergenic cat biscuits that also reduce the amount of FelD1 on the fur and there is research coming out about vaccines as well so if you're allergic watch this space!
